QURAN 2:191 (al Baqarah) DOESN’T ENCOURAGE MUSLIMS TO TERRORISM

Quran 2:191-193 DOESN’T ENCOURAGE MUSLIMS TO TERRORISM

“And slay them wherever you may come upon them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they [first] fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.” 2:191 Quran

Peace on those who wish for Peace. Guidance to those who wish otherwise.

Few months back I received a list of verses from the Quran alleging that they propagate terrorism. I list them out here one by one in these series of articles with a hope of presenting the correct explanation and context of those verses. I openly state that my aim is to defend the Quran, truth as the truth and falsehood as falsehood.

Dear reader, You have selectively quoted verses out of context. Probably had them googled out from an anti-Islamic website. Never mind. If you are a God Conscious person and a seeker of truth you will find this article beneficial, God willing.

We will speak of each of the concerned verses one by one in this series of articles.

You have quoted 2:191 but did you read ONE verse ABOVE it or ONE verse BELOW it? If you had then you would have known the context and the condition in which verse 2:191 was revealed. Also you would have read amongst the most peaceful and just verses which your Creator has revealed. The following is the ONE verse ABOVE 2:191

“Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.” 2:190 Quran

Why wasn’t this verse present in the site you googled out? In just 1 verse, the Quran puts 3 conditions for this fighting, yet we ignore that to suit our purpose and allege that Quran propagates mindless slaughter. Following are the three conditions.

Condition 1 – Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you”. The instigation of violence should be from the other side first, hence the clause “fight…those who fight you” is mentioned here. Where is the mindless slaughter? If the other side is peaceful, why will the follower of this verse fight him?

Condition 2 – I will tell you the greatness of this verse. While there is no law in the world which prevents fighting for causes like power, wealth, honor and glory, Islam is the only religion which forbids fighting for any of these reasons. If the opposing side fights a Muslim for Power, wealth, honor and glory, the Quran does not permit us to fight back. If they do so they do it under their own desire and not because of the Quran. Allah clearly states in this verse “Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you.” The “cause of Allah” is not power, wealth, honor or glory which happen to be the causes of most of the wars of the world since the advent of humanity. So what is this “cause of Allah”? The “cause of Allah” is mentioned ONE verse BELOW the verse which is alleged as propagates terrorism. We will come to that.

Condition 3 The third condition which 2:190 puts is, “but do not transgress limits. In the context of war what does “do not transgress limits” mean? The Prophet, peace on him specifically ordered not to harm any woman, children and anyone who was unarmed or incapable to fight. He specifically ordered not to harm the properties or destroy the crops of the enemy. Under the influence of his peaceful teachings his followers even desisted harming ARMED Women during the battles. (See Muhammad – His Life based on the earliest sources, by Martin Lings, Page 182 for one such example). For a follower of Quran and the Prophet, this is what “do not transgress limits” means and he will never transgress these limits because if he does then his Creator will not love him, for Allah loveth not transgressorsaccording to the same verse i.e 2:190. Where is the mindless slaughter and terrorism that is being alleged here? The corrupt soul of man knows no bound for his mischief and the Quran tones down this by setting strict restrictions and you creator explains you with Love and Compassion that if you do wrong he will not Love you. These are the peaceful teachings of Islam.

So now we have established against whom we should fight, Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you. In the next verse your God explains why and how you should fight. Should the fighting be done half-halfheartedly, hesitatingly, softly…is that how you fight when an army is standing in front of you ready to wipe you out? You come to do the job that you came to do. i.e fight till you succeed in getting justice.

The following verse was revealed during the initial history of Islam at the onset of a major war during the time of the Prophet, peace on him after the Muslims were forced to Migrate from Mecca to Medina due to oppression from the Meccan idolaters. The Muslims had left their homes, properties, livestock and their business and migrated to Medina because they said their God is the One God. These verses were revealed to these refugees informing them that is legal and permissible to fight back not just to reclaim what was lost, but also to ensure that the Oppressors are subdued so that they don’t oppress others in the future. These “others” can be the same Muslims themselves! So in the context of an ensuing war where the opposing armies are facing each other, what does a commander say to his army when they are facing the enemy? Is it any different from the below verses say?

“And slay them wherever you may come upon them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they [first] fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.” 2:191 Quran

Again the Quran tones down and puts sever restrictions. Let’s analyze this verse.

Condition 4 turn them out from where they have turned you out, Since when is fighting to protect or trying to re-claim what was lost be taken as terrorism?

Condition 5 –  fight them not… unless they [first] fight you, these expressions unequivocally state that fighting is for self-defense and justice. How do these conditions get missed out when allegations of terrorism are made against the Quran? In fact there was no need for explanation of any other verse. This verse itself contains the required justification.

Now let us read ONE verse BELOW the verse which is alleged as promotes terrorism.

“But if they cease, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.” 2:192 Koran

Was this verse not read before making the allegation? Again and again the Quran puts the restrictions. This is condition 6. In which way do the words, “Allah is OFTEN FORGIVING and “MOST MERCIFUL present in 2:192 strike as terror inspiring? For the person who is God conscious, humble and seeker of truth I will say that there can be no greater peaceful verses in the context of war than the very verses that are written on the list. But for the person who seeks to divide people on religion, isolate them and vilify his fellow brethren I will say that no other religious scripture puts down the laws of war as carefully as the Quran and I challenge him to produce verses related to war from his scriptures, expounding the reasons to go to war according to his scriptures, the restrictions, and other laws related to war mentioned in his scriptures in comparison with those of the Quran.

In the very next verse, the Quran explains what is meant by fighting “in the cause of Allah” so that there remains no doubt whatsoever to you.

“And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression.” 2:193 Quran

This is a two line verse yet Allah puts 5 additional conditions in it explaining what is the “cause of Allah

Condition 7 – Fight till there is no more tumult or Oppression and the people are free from tyranny of the tyrants.

Condition 8 – Till justice prevails and injustice of all kind is rooted out.

Condition 9 – Till people begin to have faith in Allah, Allah being the Arabic expression for the word “God” or “Bhagavan” or “Ishwar”. Meaning that no physical force present on earth can prevent a man from committing a crime if he wishes to commit. The only thing which will prevent him is the morality of his own soul and his God consciousness. This is what Allah means when he says developing “Faith in Allah“.

Condition 10 – but if they cease, i.e. if the oppressors cease their oppression then “Let there be no hostility

Condition 11 – except to those who practice oppression.

The explanation cannot be clearer than this. Where is the mindless slaughter and terrorism that is being alleged here? Like I said, I would like to see similar verses in other scriptures and the causes they put forth for fighting.

I have touched just 4 verses from 2:190 to 2:193 to explain the context of 2:191 and we have seen that the Quran lays down 11 conditions for fighting in just 4 small verses. These are the most peaceful and just verses revealed in the context of war.

Quran is a book and guidance for all situations and warfare is one of those. You have wrongly Quoted 2:191 out of context. If it was out of ignorance I pray to the Allah to guide us all. If you had quoted to cause mischief and spread violence among your fellow citizens then I still pray Allah to guide us all.
