6.7 THE QURAN ON STAGES OF HUMAN EMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT

The Quran On Stages Of Human Embryonic Development:

This is the seventh proof that i am providing in my quest to prove that Quran is from God. In the Holy Quran, God speaks about the stages of man’s embryonic development:

“We created man from an extract of clay.  Then We made him as a drop in a place of settlement, firmly fixed.  Then We made the drop into an alaqah (leech, suspended thing, and blood clot), then We made the alaqah into a mudghah (chewed substance).”                          -Noble Quran, 23:12-14

The above verse gives the following steps in the human embryonic development:-

  • 1. Allah created man from an extract of clay
  • 2. Then We made him as a drop in a place of settlement, firmly fixed
  • 3. Then We made the drop into an alaqah (leech, suspended thing, and blood clot)
  • 4. then We made the alaqah into a mudghah (chewed substance)…

The first statement simply signifies that human beings are essentially composed of extracts of earth namely organic substances, minerals and salts etc. This is a general statement that is applicable to all living things. The second statement refers to the fertilized egg that is firmly lodged in the womb.

The third and fourth statement is where the scientific miracle unravels. It says “Then We made the drop into an alaqah (leech, suspended thing, and blood clot)

Literally, the Arabic word alaqah in the above statement has three meanings: (1) leech, (2) suspended thing, and (3) blood clot.

In comparing a leech to an embryo in the alaqah stage, we find similarity between the two as we can see in figure 1.

The Developing Human, Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 8.

Also, the embryo at this stage obtains nourishment from the blood of the mother, similar to the leech, which feeds on the blood of others.

Human Development as Described in the Quran and Sunnah, Moore and others, p. 36.

(Leech drawing from Human Development as Described in the Quran and Sunnah, Moore and others, p. 37, modified from Integrated Principles of Zoology, Hickman and others.  Embryo drawing from The Developing Human, Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 73.)

The second meaning of the word alaqah is “suspended thing.”  This is what we can see in figures 2 and 3, the suspension of the embryo, during the alaqah stage, in the womb of the mother.

Figure 2: We can see in this diagram the suspension of an embryo during the alaqah stage in the womb (uterus) of the mother. (The Developing Human, Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 66.)

Figure 3: In this photomicrograph, we can see the suspension of an embryo (marked B) during the alaqah stage (about 15 days old) in the womb of the mother.  The actual size of the embryo is about 0.6 mm. (The Developing Human, Moore, 3rd ed., p. 66, from Histology, Leeson and Leeson.)

The third meaning of the word alaqah is “blood clot.”  We find that the external appearance of the embryo and its sacs during the alaqah stage is similar to that of a blood clot.  This is due to the presence of relatively large amounts of blood present in the embryo during this stage [1] (see figure 4).  Also during this stage, the blood in the embryo does not circulate until the end of the third week. [2] Thus, the embryo at this stage is like a clot of blood.

(1) Human Development as Described in the Quran and Sunnah, Moore and others, pp. 37-38. (2) The Developing Human, Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 65.

(The Developing Human, Moore, 5th ed., p. 65.)

So the three meanings of the word alaqah correspond accurately to the descriptions of the embryo at the alaqah stage mentioned in the noble Quran.

Moving on to the fourth statement which says “then We made the alaqah into a mudghah (chewed substance)…”   The Arabic word mudghah means “chewed substance.”  If one were to take a piece of gum and chew it in his or her mouth and then compare it with an embryo at the mudghah stage, we would conclude that the embryo at the mudghah stage acquires the appearance of a chewed substance.  This is because of the somites at the back of the embryo that “somewhat resemble teeth marks in a chewed substance.”  (see figures 5 and 6).

Figure 5: Photograph of an embryo at the mudghah stage (28 days old).  The embryo at this stage acquires the appearance of a chewed substance, because the somites at the back of the embryo somewhat resemble teeth marks in a chewed substance.  The actual size of the embryo is 4 mm. (The Developing Human, Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 82, from Professor Hideo Nishimura, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan.)

Figure 6: When comparing the appearance of an embryo at the mudghah stage with a piece of gum that has been chewed, we find similarity between the two.

Why is this a scientific miracle?

This is a true scientific miracle because: –

  1. The alaqah stage (third statement) CAN ONLY AND ONLY be known with the help of powerful microscopes. The first true microscope was invented only around 1595 in Middelburg, Holland while the Quranic statement dates back to 610 AD

  • 2. How could Muhammad have possibly known all this 1400 years ago, when scientists have only recently discovered this using advanced equipment and powerful microscopes which did not exist at that time? Hamm and Leeuwenhoek were the first scientists to observe human sperm cells (spermatozoa) using an improved microscope in 1677 (more than 1000 years after Muhammad ). They mistakenly thought that the sperm cell contained a miniature preformed human being that grew when it was deposited in the female genital tract while almost a 1000 years before them the noble Quran gave accurate descriptions.

-The Developing Human, Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 9.

“Say: If the whole of mankind and Jinns were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur’an

they could not produce the like thereof                                                   even if they backed up each other with help                                            and support.”

-Noble Quran 17:88

Professor Emeritus Keith L. Moore (as of 1997) is one of the world’s most prominent scientists in the fields of anatomy and embryology and is the author of the book entitled The Developing Human, which has been translated into eight languages.   This book is a scientific reference work and was chosen by a special committee in the United States as the best book authored by one person.  Dr. Keith Moore is Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.  There, he was Associate Dean of Basic Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and for 8 years was the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy.  In 1984, he received the most distinguished award presented in the field of anatomy in Canada, the J.C.B. Grant Award from the Canadian Association of Anatomists.  He has directed many international associations, such as the Canadian and American Association of Anatomists and the Council of the Union of Biological Sciences.

In 1981, during the Seventh Medical Conference in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Professor Moore said: “It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the Quran about human development.  It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later.  This proves to me that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God.” (To view the RealPlayer video of this comment click here).

Consequently, Professor Moore was asked the following question: “Does this mean that you believe that the Quran is the word of God?”  He replied: “I find no difficulty in accepting this.” (In the above tape)

During one conference, Professor Moore stated: “….Because the staging of human embryos is complex, owing to the continuous process of change during development, it is proposed that a new system of classification could be developed using the terms mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah (what Muhammad  said, did, or approved of).  The proposed system is simple, comprehensive, and conforms with present embryological knowledge.  The intensive studies of the Quran and hadeeth (reliably transmitted reports by the Prophet Muhammad’s  companions of what he said, did, or approved of) in the last four years have revealed a system for classifying human embryos that is amazing since it was recorded in the seventh century A.D.  Although Aristotle, the founder of the science of embryology, realized that chick embryos developed in stages from his studies of hen’s eggs in the fourth century B.C., he did not give any details about these stages.  As far as it is known from the history of embryology, little was known about the staging and classification of human embryos until the twentieth century.  For this reason, the descriptions of the human embryo in the Quran cannot be based on scientific knowledge in the seventh century.   The only reasonable conclusion is: these descriptions were revealed to Muhammad from God.  He could not have known such details because he was an illiterate man with absolutely no scientific training.” (View the RealPlayer video of this comment).

“Seek ye the forgiveness of your Lord and                                               turn to Him in repentance;

that He may grant you enjoyment good                                                   (and true)for a term appointed…”

  1. I see here a serious contradiction. The moslem claim that koran is from God is wrong. koran contains many many errors and contradictions. Regarding human development, how was man created? the koran gives atleast 7 different contradictory answers!

    A blood clot [96:1-2],
    water [21:30, 24:45, 25:54],
    “sounding” (i.e. burned) clay [15:26],
    dust [3:59, 30:20, 35:11],
nothing [19:67] and this is then denied in 52:35,
    earth [11:61],
    a drop of thickened fluid [16:4, 75:37]

the Quran is not from god.

  2. You see, this is the difference between me and you. You see the cup as half empty while I see it as half full. You saw a contradiction here while I am seeing an amazing miracle of miracles right in front of my eyes. I’ll give u an example to prove you that this is a scientific miracle and not a contradiction. Consider a barbaric tribe of primitive human beings who don’t know how to construct concrete homes. Let’s say one of the tribal’s somehow miraculously learns to read and write. Now somehow let’s say he lays his hands on book ‘xyz’ and gains valuable information regarding construction of houses. Let’s say that the book said him that houses are constructed from cement. So for many years he tries to build a home with only and only cement but fails miserably as he doesn’t know that houses need many more things than just cement. But strangely he finds another book that says that houses are constructed from sand! Even more strangely he finds a third book that says him that houses are constructed from Steel rods! To make matters worse, a fourth book says that houses are constructed from wood and water!!!!. So somehow he puts two and two together and finally constructs a concrete home with all the above materials.

Now, I ask you Mr.who cares, will that man be thankful for those books for giving him different yet accurate and relevant information about houses or will he be a stiff necked person (like the ACTUAL DUMB PERSON who made the allegation on Quran) and reject those books as contradictory and erroneous?

This is exactly the case with the Quran. It says, we are created from “A blood clot [96:1-2]”. Is it scientifically wrong? Quran says that we were created from water “[21:30, 24:45, and 25:54].” Is it scientifically wrong? Quran says that we were “produced you from the earth [11:61], “. Now I am very sure that neither I nor any of my friends fell from the sky. What about you? Quran says that “he has created man from a sperm drop; [16:4]” At this point I am tempted to say so many things but I will resist for courtesy sake. I merely ask you, is this scientifically wrong? Quran says that we were created from dust [3:59, 30:20, 35:11] meaning refined earth which is nothing but mineral and salts in pure forms. If only you had chemistry lab at high school would you have known that EVERY SALT IS A SOLID IN ROCKY OR POWDERED FORM giving the appearance of dust. I also understand that you perhaps didn’t have a proper chemistry lab. So no offence taken. Quran says that “We created man from sounding clay from mud molded into shape;” [15.26] which is nothing but the summation or totality or grouping of all mentioned ingredients to give a final shape just like how our tribal friend gave final shape to his concrete home.

There is no contradiction here my friend. This is a miracle of miracles for a book so old to give such perfect and scientific statements. This is not fluke either. You must know that the more a dumb person talks the more his dumbness becomes apparent. So when the Quran makes so many statements about the same thing, if it was of human origin, it would have made a mistake in the process. But since there is no mistake, it is definitely divine.

Look. I don’t have time to fancifully spend hours researching to answer silly allegations as these. So next time when u Google for supposed ‘error’, just make sure it is worth my time.

As for your view that Quran is not from God, i would politely ask you to go through the previous 6 miracles that i have posted. You will find lots of amazing people like you attempting to disprove the divinity of Quran. See for yourselves how they all failed.
