Verse 9:29 of Surah at-tauba is probably the intentionally most misinterpreted verse of the Quran. This is what it says: –
“Fight those who believe not in God nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by God and His Apostle, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth , (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” S. 9:29 Y. Dear brother mansour, I totally understand you when you say that this verse promotes violence on a cursory glance. But if you read it carefully you’ll find that it doesn’t. I hope you will be patient enough to be with me throughout the end of this article.
The verse says “Fight those who believe not in God nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by God and His Apostle, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth”.
My question to you brother. Does this verse stop here? No it doesnt. It continues and gives the actual reason as to the fighting. This is the continuation: – “until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued”.
1. PAYING JIZYA IS THE CONDITION FOR FIGHTING. THIS STATEMENT IS TOTALLY IGNORED OR OVERLOOKED WHEN LEVYING THIS ALLEGATION OF VIOLENCE ON MUSLIMS.
This verse doesn’t ask the Muslims to do mindless slaughter as the media portrays or deceives. It gives the Muslims the permission to fight only those non-Muslims who do not pay jizya – the state tax. And we all know that jizya is applicable only in an Islamic state. Neither India, nor US or Britain are Islamic states. So to put this verse as an excuse for what happened there only shows how biased, unknowledgable and unfair the media is and it hurts us deeply.
I can show whole verses from other scriptures that are truly inhuman, yet no one questions them. Do you want a sample? Ill give it to you at the end. I promise.
2. THE VERSE DOES NOT ASK THE MUSLIMS TO DO FORCEFUL CONVERSIONS.
Again, the verse permits the muslims to fight the non –muslims in an islamic state ONLY and ONLY if they refuse to pay the jizya – Willingly . Re-read the verse from ANY translation if you are not sure. But once they pay the jizya tax they can continue to believe in their atheistic pagan beliefs, but it will be under an Islamic state. You can still forgive them by not forcing them into Islam, nor oppressing them or being bad to them because of their wrong beliefs.
3. QURAN NEVER SAYS TO KILL THE DISBELIEVERS JUST BECAUSE THEY DISBELIEVE.
This is not to you brother coz I consider you as a truly respectable friend. To others who read this article – I openly challenge you to show me ONE verse from the Quran which says to kill the disbelievers just because they are disbelievers. There are verses which permit the Muslims to fight and kill non-Muslims. But every time sensible and reasonable conditions are laid. I can show you all verses from other religious scriptures where slaughtering is done for reasons that are as silly and stupid as honor, glory and greatness. Sometimes for fun too. Wait till the end of the article to have a sample.
4. JIZYA ISN’T A RANSOM OR A BAD THING
Coming back to the verse, now people might say isn’t it unfair that they have to pay the jizya tax? Not really. Since when is punishment for refusal to pay lawful taxes considered as terrorism? Also, the jizya tax is very cheap and affordable, and it grants the non-Muslim’s many benefits, benefits which even the Muslims don’t get! For instance, the non-Muslims who are paying jizya in an Islamic state are not obliged to take part in any battle or war, unless they themselves choose to, the Muslims do not have this choice. Muslims have to actually burn their asses out to protect both Muslims and non-Muslims living in their lands. Also if the Islamic state cannot grant protection to the non-Muslims then the non-Muslims are not obliged to pay the jizya tax, since Muslims themselves must meet expectations for the jizya tax to be implemented. Also, Society today has no problem in paying taxes to the government, so therefore they should have no problem in paying a tax in an Islamic state either.
There you go my friend, verse 9:29 doesn’t encourage the muslims to do terrorism. It is a perfectly fair and just verse. Just throw this article on the face of anybody who tries to misrepresent islam to you in the future.
5. EVERY AUTHENTIC TRANSLATION OF THE QURAN HAS THE WORD “UNTIL” OR “TILL” IN THE VERSE 9:29
I could lay my hands on 7 different english translations of the quran and ALL OF THEM HAVE THE CONDITION:-
1. “[And] fight against those who – despite having been vouchsafed revelation [aforetime] – do not [truly] believe either in God or the last Day, and do not consider forbidden that which God and His Apostle have forbidden, and do not follow the religion of truth [which God has enjoined upon the], till they [agree to] pay the exemption tax with a willing hand, after having been humbled [in war]” 9:29 Asad’s Translation
2. “Fight those people of the Book (Jews and Christians) who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, do not refrain from what has been prohibited by Allah and His Rasool and do not embrace the religion of truth (Al-Islam), until they pay Jizya (protection tax) with their own hands and feel themselves subdued.” 9:29 Malik’s Translation
3. “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His apostle nor acknowledge the religion of truth (even if they are) of the People of the Book until they pay the Jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued.” 9:29 Yusuf Ali’s Translation
4. “Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the religion of truth, until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low.” 9:29 Pickthall’s Translation

6. “Fight those People of the Book who do not believe in Allah, nor in the Last Day, and do not take as unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have declared as unlawful, and do not profess the Faith of Truth; (fight them) until they pay jizyah with their own hands while they are subdued.” 9:29 Mufti Taqi Usmani’s Translation
7. “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture – [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.” 9:29 Sahih International Translation
6. FIGHTING NEED NOT ALWAYS BE PHYSICAL, IT CAN ALSO BE INTELLECTUAL
Finally, people might now say well isn’t Islam violent because Muslims are commanded to fight those who do not believe in God and so on etc etc. Not really, because fighting in this verse does not explicitly mean physical violence. Observe the words in the above verses like “willingly”, “willing submission”, “readily” etc. Here it is spoken about bringing a change from within the hearts of people which is brought about intellectually. There are many ways in which you fight against somebody that does not involve a physical aspect. You can fight someone with the tongue, using your wisdom and telling him about the truth, you are fighting against the lies that person is propagating and eventually with your tongue you will speak the truth and crush his lies leading him to the truth. So fighting does not have to only be physical.
But alas! We totally over look these things when we mindlessly base allegations on the Quran. I never comment on any religion until I have read and understood ALL their scriptures. I don’t just google out some anti-religious sites to come up with instant allegations. This is so unfair.
7. Quick Noble Verses that refute the terrorism LIE in Islam:
“Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loveth not transgressors. (The Noble Quran, 2:190)“
“But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in God: for He is One that heareth and knoweth (all things). (The Noble Quran, 8:61)“
“If thou dost stretch thy hand against me, to slay me, it is not for me to stretch my hand against thee to slay thee: for I do fear God, the cherisher of the worlds. (The Noble Quran, 5:28)“
“God does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought you about religion and have not driven you out of your homes. God loves just dealers. (The Noble Quran, 60:8)“
“And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for God. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers. (The Noble Quran 2:193)“
“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy handhold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. (The Noble Quran, 2:256)“
“Again and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to God’s will) in Islam. Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them). (The Noble Quran, 15:2-3)“
“Say, ‘The truth is from your Lord’: Let him who will believe, and let him who will, reject (it):……(The Noble Quran, 18:29)“
“If it had been thy Lord’s will, they would all have believed,- all who are on earth! wilt thou then COMPEL mankind, against their will, to believe! (The Noble Quran, 10:99)“
“Say: ‘Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger: but if ye turn away, he is only responsible for the duty placed on him and ye for that placed on you. If ye obey him, ye shall be on right guidance. The Messenger’s duty is only to preach the clear (Message). (The Noble Quran, 24:54)“
“Say : O ye that reject Faith! I worship not that which ye worship, Nor will ye worship that which I worship. And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship, Nor will ye worship that which I worship. To you be your Way, and to me mine. (The Noble Quran, 109:1-6)“
I can spend my entire life showing you verses such as these that are littered throughout the Quran which throw the lie of terrorism out of the window.
You said “the alleged terrorizing verses” of the quran are everywhere. i ask you brother to point out EVERY such verse from the Quran so that i can clear up the matter with you. Google them out if you want. I don’t care. But don’t forget to compare them with what i am going to show you next.

I’m not gonna comment on the noble verse coz our brother made a great job here.
Actually I’m going to tell you about another part u may not know or may know. Muslims spent 13 years in Makkah at the beginning of da’wa and they were not allowed to put their hand on any of the non-Muslims there while they were tortured and obliged to leave their homes, entrapped and not allowed to have their essential needs, u might say they were weak and I’ll tell u some of them were weak but the others were one of the strongest ppl n their trip and having a very high social status so they can do something, but why they weren’t allowed to fight n that period? Bcoz Allah Al-Mighty want to show them that they wont spread Islam by the power of the sword.

This explanation is satisfactory. In fact there was no need to explain anything because everything is clear in the verse itself. The condition for violence has been clearly stated. If anyone quotes this as a proof that koran encourages terrorism then there’s something seriously wrong with them.
Going by the biblical terror that the author explains in so much detail, i doubt that any christian would say that islam is a terrorist religion after reading literally hundreds of verses about terrorism in their own bible.
The verse that pearlland gives is a slap on the faces of people who claim that islam spread by sword.
I always had an irk that as Jihadis and muslim terrorists claimed that Quran, delivered to them had asked to remove the traces of non-muslims, I wondered how would a religious document would ask its people to kill others mercilessly?
But, now I got a perfect answer for my question and I am exhilerated to learn that Quran never actually asks its followers to kill others. Its all the brain washing being performed on the people that is causing these mishaps.

It says they pay the tax and feel subdued, humiliated, brought low…..This is not just a state tax, it’s a special separate tax designed to make non Muslims feel inferior to Muslims. It’s perfectly clear in that verse. Why would people lie about this?

These are the words you used: –
1. feel subdued
2. humiliated
3. brought low
I do not know in which country you live. But i am sure in whichever country you live, you willingly submit yourselves, obey, follow and ensure that others too follow the local state laws. That should answer the “feel subdued” accusation.
Then you used the word “humiliated”. and you said ” Why would people lie about this?”. It seems to me that you are the one who is lying here because none of these 7 translations use the word “humiliated” to refer to the non muslims. Perhaps you mistook it for “being humbled”. I am sure you no problem in following your local state laws with humbleness and sincerity. So why is it a problem to you if Quran asks the same of the non muslims?
Then you used the words ” brought low”. If you are a good citizen of your country am sure you will not consider anything to be above your local state laws except perhaps God himself.
Everything would be justified if you choose to have a broad mind and willingness to accept what is true and just. Jizya is perfectly fair and properly justified. I hope this answers your question,

It contradicts 2:256:
“There is no Compulsion in religion.”
The verse is telling Muslims to fight (or intellectually harass) non-Muslims living in an Islamic state if they do not happen to believe in God etc.
This explanation paints Islam in an unfavourable light, and is a contradiction.
To clarify:
“…until they pay the Jizya with willing submission.”
So, not only must they pay it, they must WANT to.
Compulsion.
Because, it is not telling Muslims to fight Muslims who do not pay the tax.
You might argue that the tax is a state thing. In this case, why did it specify non-believers?

From when is paying tax a “harassment” to you? Will your country leave you alone if you don’t pay tax? If your country makes it a compulsion on you to pay tax do you call it “harassment”? No right. so whats wrong when Islam imposes tax on the non muslims in an islamic country? Should i tell you too the whole story from the beginning like how muslims are exempted from this tax as they are the ones who need to burn their asses out in protecting the non muslims under their jurisdiction while the non muslims are free to do what they want?

Yes i absolutely admit that an islamic state imposes tax on unbelievers BECAUSE of their religion. Whats there to admit here? the whole issues is of religion brother. Now please don’t say that Islam differentiates humans on the basis of religion because of this in a negative way. We all differentiate humans based on so many things every day, every minute of our lives. If their was no differentiation then America would have granted citizenship to any tom, dick and harry entering its shores. But it doesnt do it. Why? because it differentiates between humans based on the nationality. Now is this bad? No. every country has the right to protect its own interests. This applies even to an Islamic state. And for the muslims Islam isnt just religion with a set of phylosophical dialogues. For us ISLAM IS LAW. And we believe that only muslims are the people who would interpret this law in the best way. Thats common sense. WE are also aware that with the power to interpret this law comes the responsibilty to implement it. And to make things simple for all we readily do everything like sacrificing our brothers, fathers and husbands when the time comes for the people ( both muslims and non muslims). While such a thing is optional for the non muslims, it is mandatory for the muslims. In return for all the things like administration, maintaining law and order, development, improving the economy and protection, we collect a small amount of money from the non muslims who otherwise get all these things for free and this is called Jizya. Hope you understand.

unlike Christianity we Muslims dont twist verses to get new meaning out of it. Please dont twist Quranic verses but feel free to twist your biblical verses as much as you want. Unlike you, in Islam if a verse says “Jesus is the son of man” we Muslims believe that “Jesus is the son of man”.

in reply to this Guy Macher – had written one long story of how Quran allegedly incites unnecessary violence.. he quotes many verses from the Quran in support of this. Its completely useless arguing with this guy as he he quotes everything out of context. for example in one of the verses Quran does say “kill the disbelievers”. inistially when Islam was revealed muslims werent permitted to fight or even defend themselves. But due to increased persecution Allah finally permitted them to fight in retalliation. And this particular verse was the revealation that permitted muslims to fight – that battle at that particular time or a similar battle in present or future under similar circumstances. but this guys christian glasses are so thick that for him this means “kill the disbelievers at anytime anyplace” This is the pathetic and shameful standards which he has to interpret verses. Perhaps this explains why when in the bible jesus says a 100 times that he is “the son of man” but he refuses to belive in it. but i am sure this guy would believe that jesus is “son of God” if some other character of the bible tells it just once. This is the standards of his interpretation.
The title Son of Man is the prophetic title of the Messiah, see Daniel 7:12. Perhaps you should read before you write.
Why do Muslims keep saying read in context when the Koran itself repeats and repeats from the first page that it is easy to understand?
If the Koran is a universal book for all men for all time, why is so much of it about specific events. Are you telling me that Sura 9:5 and 163 other verses about killing and hate, are simply historical and not pedagogical?
Anyway, provide the context of these hateful verses. Any man can hate. Jesus said love your enemies. I do not hate Muslims, I hate the doctrine of evil they follow. I also hate Mein Kampf!

When Muhammad discovered that the Confederates were unaware of their co-tribalist’s conversion, he counseled Masud to return and try somehow to get the Confederates to abandon the siege — “For,” Muhammad assured him, “war is deceit.” Masud returned to the Confederates without their knowing that he had “switched sides,” and began giving his former kin and allies bad advice. He also went to great lengths to instigate quarrels between the various tribes until, thoroughly distrusting each other, they disbanded, lifting the siege from the Muslims, and thereby saving Islam in its embryonic period (see Al-Taqiyya fi Al-Islam; also, Ibn Ishaq’s Sira, the earliest biography of Muhammad).

(IF what u wrote is true )For all i know from your post is that Muslims were able to win the siege or whatever without actually having to fight with the enemy as the enemy was busy quarreling with each other thus saving precious life n blood from both sides. A brilliant idea is what this is and not terrorism.

I am a student of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. I have studied the payment of jizya – and it is a completely fair tax. Firstly, it is used as an agreement, that the non- Muslim person and their family want to be citizens of the Muslim state. It is NOT discriminatory. Muslims pay Zakah, which helps the poor, unemployed etc of the Islamic society, the non-Muslims pay Jizyah for their protection, firstly from other invading armies and also as a welfare programme. It is like contributing to a treasury.

Why don’t muslims like al qaeda, hezbollah, and the taliban kill and behead people and say such….well terror in the name of God? Why do they say the Quran gives them the right to? Why do they treat women so badly?
I guess i’ve always felt that these terrorist are not muslims…they’re murders. It really bothers me when someone kills or does bad things to humans and says it’s in the name of God. WE ALL SIN, but God does not need us to do his “dirty” work. (not that it’s dirty i just don’t know how else to word it).
I belive in God very much so. But i don’t want to be called christian, muslim, jew, catholic, baptist….all these labels. I prefer to call myself a child of God. That is my religon.

@Jennifer, they are misguided, no one who feared God would do a sin like kill someone just because they are not muslim, I have countless non muslim family members and neighbours and everyone around me and the thought of harming them let alone doing anything worse than that makes me afraid…in respect of 7/7 I think it was a copycat attack of 9/11 which most people don’t know who is behind 9/11. Most muslims would fear God too much to do something like that. As for the mistreatment of their wives of daughters etc, I think that comes from whoever does that being bad people not because they are muslim as men from other religions also mistreat their women but it doesn’t say in any islamic scriptures to do so.

ask him to read the Quran from cover to cover, it convinced me it was the words of God. Also show him in the Quran the verse where it says ”there is no compulsion in religion”, also show him where it says that repel evil with good, whoever does evil does it against his own self, where God enjoins good on us and promises the reward for it and His pleasure. Tell him that the quraysh attacked him first and he was not allowed to fight back when they fought him first until God gave Him permission to fight. Show him the proofs of the Quran from the many beautful Surahs of the Quran. Tell him that the Quran can not have been written by Muhammad peace be upon him because of the miracles such as the embryology, cloud science, mountain knowledge and other things such as the big bang theory being mentioned briefly and that the prophet could not have known about the common origin on the earth and all planets and things in the universe ie that they were joined and then were split apart, and ask him to show you that in the bible or other scripture. Show him the verse about jesus in teh Quran and show him where prophet Muhammad is mentioned in the bible. Type in Jesus calls God Allah into youtube. Masha Allah! i think the problem that we have in this 21st century is that Islam is so dominant and clear in what it teaches that the non-muslims simply refuse to understand it. In other words they are in a state of denial!!!

No muslim will behead people. It is some groups against muslims doing this background secret work and blames muslims. Also all religion has good and bad people. But never put the blame on the Holy Scripture and the real followers

Thank you very much!!!… The interpretation of this verse by the Christians deeply troubled me. I saw a couple of videos which say that the Quran asks us to fight the Christians and Jews because of this verse. Muslims paid their ‘zakat’ (tax) to the Islamic state, whereas, non muslims didn’t but continued to enjoy the benefits of the state; i.e. Protection, security, no military services, etc. without payment of any such tax.
Hence its very logical, when the Quran requests them to pay the jiziya tax.
